So for one of the masses just starting out home recording with a typical home environment, would the AKG P120 make more sense?

I thought I made myself clear, but I can clarify what I mean by this. The mic indeed loves space and is not suitable for a typical home environment; such is when an unsuspecting user simply buys a mic, amp & pc interface thinking this is it... and puts it on a table of his living room. However when the environment is taken care of, the venue is relatively quiet and spacious and or treated with acoustic panels then it's a different story, hope you get the idea. In the hands of a sound engineer who has valid reasons to use an LDC but simply doesn't want to spend much cash, it is an excellent choice indeed.

If you know what you are doing, it won't leave you disappointed at all, especially considering its abnormally low price. But once again for a typical home recording, most consumers barely understand what they are buying: AKG Perception 220 will work of course, when you plug it, but you won't be able to get the best of it, so it's better to get something else. On the other hand, those who know a thing or two about recording... don't even need to read reviews, they already know what they are going to buy and why. So it is indeed pointless to recommend this mic to the masses, nevertheless its actual quality and the price do justify a high review score according to our standards.

PS: I decided to reduce the score slightly, so it matches the expectations.

This is frankly a confusing and illogical review. For something given a 9 out of 10, it sure got a lot of criticism. On the one hand we get "studio worthy" and "Good sound on vocals given enough space".......and then "Not the ideal choice for home recording of vocals." Stop being so wishy-washy and trying to straddle the fence; either do or don't recommend it.
